The Woman’s Hospital of Texas expanded its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by 18,000 square feet, adding 22 new level 3 NICU beds, bringing its total to 146 beds.  This $10 million expansion is spearheaded by DPR.  As Pieper-Houston Electric has worked for the Woman’s Hospital in the past, specifically on its 2016 vertical expansion, our team of dedicated electricians were already familiar with the safety measures and protocols in place with this particularly well-known hospital.

Pieper Houston Electric served as part of the team with General contractor JE Dunn to expand and then build the existing 26 story UT Health Science Center University Center Tower which was build in 1973.  The vertical expansion project consisted of adding two stories to create approximately 40,000 SF of medical office space above the existing top garage level. The University Center Tower Expansion included interior construction of 39,259 sq. ft. of classroom and office space for the School of Biomedical Informatics. This project was completed on time in January 2019.

Currently under construction Pieper Houston is the electrical contractor for UT- Health Science Center at Houston Continuum of Care Campus. The new inpatient behavioral health treatment facility will feature inpatient treatment, residential treatment, residential independent living, an outpatient assessment center, and a community conference center. This $90 million was started in June 2019 scheduled to be complete in November 2021.

The University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland’s 75,000 square foot health sciences classroom building houses the Center for Autism and Development Disabilities and the License Professional Counselors Program. On this ground up project Pieper Houston served as the electrical contractor which includes a new 100-seat lecture hall, biology and chemistry labs, nursing services and healthcare teaching laboratories.

Pieper is working on renovations with Spaw Glass at the Houston Medical Center’s Ben Taub Emergency Center. Renovations include: 18 new pre-and-post operational use beds, as well as 5 new operating rooms, a blood bank, nurse call stations, a pharmacy and much more. This project has been especially challenging, not only because of HIPAA regulations, but also because of Covid-19 had hit the Houston area at the start of the project.

Clarewood House

The Clarewood House is a non-profit retirement community that has been serving the greater Houston area since 1963. Pieper and Brookstone Construction teamed up to take on an extensive, six-part multiphase renovation to make the retirement community more functional, comfortable and safe for all of its residents. The project took 24 months to complete all renovations, including a brand new state-of-the-art kitchen and medical wing. In addition to the internal renovations, Pieper installed an extensive landscape lighting system.

“The real challenge of this project was working around the existing facility,” said Pieper’s Project Manager for Clarewood House, John Burkhart. “It’s definitely a team effort and we worked hard with Brookstone to make sure everything remained 100% functional and safe for the Clarewood House residents and staff.”

Women’s Hospital of Texas

In 2014, The Women’s Hospital of Texas, a Houston hospital dedicated to the health of women and newborns, underwent a major renovation and expansion. Pieper-Houston Electric assisted with both phases of the project. The renovation involved a 7,400 sq. ft. update to the existing East wing of the hospital. Pieper also helped with the 61,000 sq. ft. vertical expansion to the West wing of the hospital. The expansion included the construction and wiring of the hospital’s brand-new pediatric unit and intensive care pediatric unit.

Completing electrical work in an actively operating hospital always involves particular challenges because of the need to maintain a continual power supply for patient care. The electrical work is also particularly complicated, having to plan for complex medical equipment and additional back-up systems.

UT School of Nursing

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston has been selected by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Committee on the Environment (COTE), for the national organization’s “Top 10 Green Projects Award” for 2006.

This project is the largest green academic building in the Southwest. The facility is expected to receive a LEED Gold rating. This building is one of the first in the Houston area to achieve such a standard for innovative design.

The eight-story, $57-million building encompasses 195,000 sq. ft. The building includes approximately 20,000 sq. ft. of classrooms, a 200-seat auditorium, café and dining room, bookstore, student lounge, student government offices, research laboratory and faculty offices.

The building includes a wide range of high-performance energy practices, that take advantage of energy analysis equipment and self-metered lighting controls to reduce light pollution and increase energy efficiencies throughout the building.

These LEED practices will reduce energy bills for the owner, while producing a healthy, more productive and comfortable environment for the building occupants.

Texas Children’s Hospital: Jan & Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute

Located in the Texas Medical Center, the institute is one of the world’s first basic research facilities dedicated to childhood neurological diseases. Pieper built out two floors — the vivarium on level two for animal research, and labs and procedure rooms on levels two and 10 — of this LEED Gold Certified, 400,000 sq. ft. building.

Since the building was occupied with ongoing experiments throughout construction, Pieper monitored noise and structural vibration very closely. We executed the power distribution and difficult routing through the building so that it can handle large power loads. Because they are clean room environments, the vivarium and procedures rooms had extremely tough specifications, but our foreman successfully implemented dust-free installation of the electrical systems.

The Methodist Hospital Surgical Center

Located in Baytown, the Methodist Hospital Surgical Center was completed in February 2013. Working with a great building team including Linbeck, PhiloWilke Architects and TELIOS Engineers, Pieper was responsible for the installation of the electrical system.

MD Anderson — Alkek Tower

This project entailed installing electrical power, lighting, fire alarms, and low voltage infrastructure on inpatient floors 20-22 and was completed in 2017. As hospitals demand large amounts of energy to adequately care for their patients, Pieper understands how important it is to deliver quality electrical work that will help save lives and make patients comfortable.

Memorial Hermann Hospital

With the advent of new medical technology, electrical precision has become more and more imperative for the medical construction industry today.

This project encompassed a full array of complex electrical systems, including those found in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging (NMRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and a number of other x-ray based imaging equipment.

Not only did the high-end medical equipment make this project technical in every aspect, but it also had an incredibly tight schedule.

With the help of Pieper’s experienced team, this project was not only executed precisely, but it also beat the deadline for completion.

Jesse H. Jones Rotary House International

This is a modern hotel designated for MD Anderson Cancer Center’s patients and their families that is also linked to the hospital.

Pieper did the electrical and subbed out the FA. This was a complete floor-by-floor demo and build back of nine levels of guest rooms. The renovation also included half of levels 1 and 2, which were lobbies and dining areas.

Houston Methodist Emergency Care Centers

Pieper has helped to complete four emergency care centers for Houston Methodist. Providing care to people throughout the Houston area, each facility is approximately 10,000 sq. ft. and stands alone, serving the surrounding area. The buildings feature ten patient rooms apiece as well as on-site x-ray and CT scan equipment.

HealthSouth Cypress Hospital

Pieper collaborated with Hoar Construction on this 40-bed rehabilitation hospital in Cypress, Texas, for HealthSouth, the nation’s largest provider of inpatient rehabilitative healthcare services.

Pieper’s responsibilities for the project included electrical, lightning protection, fire alarm system and the cabling for nurse calls, data, intercom and telephone systems and security. One of the biggest obstacles the project faced was the location of the main centerpoint service. There was no access to the site for power, so a new easement from Farm-to-Market Road 1960, across someone’s property, with poles had to be built. Generators were used for temporary power for construction.

Cornerstone Hospital

Located in Webster, Texas, Cornerstone Hospital of Houston at Clear Lake’s Critical Care/Intermediate Care Unit recently underwent a renovation. After the wing was demolished, the new corridor walls and patient room dividing walls were framed to the roof deck to meet new code requirements. Pieper was tasked with installing the electrical systems.

CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital

CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital, which is part of CHRISTUS Health, a Catholic, not-for-profit health system, provides patients with the latest technology in medical care. Pieper teamed up with Vaughn Construction Company to complete the $34.5 million project in Katy, Texas.

Tied into the existing structure, the 135,000 sq. ft. bed tower is built for future vertical expansion. The tower features four floors, seven elevators and 36 patient rooms, as well as CVOR, a laboratory, an emergency department and a CATH lab.

The obstetrics expansion encompasses 6,000 sq. ft. and includes two caesarean section or six labor and delivery rooms.

Additional renovations and additions included: expansions of the imaging department and kitchen and dining areas; an addition to the radiology and fluoroscopy room; an MRI addition; and renovations to the medical/surgical area, ICU, nursery, obstetrics, Cath recovery and materials management sections.

Since the completion of the hospital in 2007, Pieper also performs preventative maintenance. We clean and torque all of the main electrical gear, tightening loose connections and installing new surge suppressors on electrical panels. We also help with lighting updates, and are the exclusive electrical contractor for the hospital.

The 370,000-sq.-ft. Bay Area Houston Regional Medical Center in Webster, Texas was completed in 2014. Pieper installed the electrical systems in this ground-up build.
